Advice for Gallipoli travellers

5 March 2010

Veterans Affairs New Zealand (VANZ) would like to remind New Zealanders intending to travel to the Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade safetravel service www.safetravel.govt.nz – the official source of advice for New Zealanders travelling or living overseas.

Each year around 20,000 visitors, mainly from New Zealand, Australia and Turkey, attend the Anzac Day commemorations on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Both the safetravel  and VANZ  website contain helpful information which will help travellers to better prepare for Anzac Day at Gallipoli.

VANZ Manager Corporate and Commemorations Elaine Myers- Davies said,

“In past years we have seen some New Zealanders arrive at Gallipoli wearing flimsy footwear like jandals. To get from the Dawn Service to Chunuk Bair for the New Zealand memorial service travellers will need to walk several kilometres often on uneven and dirt roads, so sensible walking shoes are a must.”

Both sites contain information on the services on Anzac Day, what to bring, prohibited items, expected weather conditions, safety and security advice.

“We hope that New Zealanders travelling to Gallipoli for Anzac Day will find the information useful and informative,” Ms Myers-Davies said.
