Gallipoli Student Competition
Winning essays
- Conor Donohue of Tawa College in Wellington.
Conor has a family connection to Bright Williams, New Zealand’s last First World War veteran. Conor’s entry includes extracts from Bright Williams diaries and letters home, then a discussion of the role of the memory of the war and service in subsequent conflicts that permeates Conor’s family. This includes the story of how Conor became aware of the diary’s existence. The theme is ‘last man standing’, and how the spirit of Anzac is evident in a range of features of contemporary New Zealand life.
