A Message from the Chief of Defence Force

Chief of Defence Force, LT GEN J MateparaeThe VANZ News publication is one way we can ensure we are keeping veterans up to date with changes and issues that might affect them. I recognise that as we build a fairer, more transparent, and more responsive system, not all the changes will be welcomed by everyone – that is to be expected with any change. I can tell you that every concern and issue raised with me gets looked into and a response is provided to that person. I also meet regularly with the National President of the RNZRSA, Robin Klitscher who is able to raise issues directly with me and the General Manager of VANZ, Rick Ottaway. Together we have a strong and productive working relationship. Sometimes we do find VANZ has got something wrong and then we set about putting it right. Most often though, it becomes apparent that an issue has arisen out of some misunderstanding or miscommunication, which has meant a veteran has, for whatever reason, different expectations to what we can actually do for them as set out in statute. So providing veterans with timely and accurate information is certainly one of the aims of this new newsletter.

Looking ahead, there are two significant issues I would like to alert you to. The first is about the Defence Service Medal to recognise all New Zealanders who have served in our regular and non-regular forces. The Medallic Recognition Joint Working Group will shortly be providing Government with their recommendations. I look forward to being able to update you on the outcomes of this work when decisions are made. Second, there are a number of recommendations by VANZ on deployments that would be given ‘Emergency Service’ status under the War Pensions Act, which includes, for example, entitlement to burial in a Services cemetery. This is an important body of work where VANZ is producing advice to the Government “on behalf of veterans”. Again, I look forward to letting you know the outcome of any decisions that are made.

Together we are building an even stronger Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand, in support of New Zealand’s veteran community.

Chief of Defence Force
LT GEN J Mateparae
