Questions and Answers

What is Case Management?

Case management supports veterans who have issues as a result of their service, or are frail and elderly and need support to manage in their own homes. Case managers can liaise with other organisations on your behalf, and facilitate access to the delivery of services. Case managers can work with you to develop ways to improve and maintain your quality of life. Case managers also manage the War Disablement Pension claims process. Your case manager is your single point of contact with Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand.

How do I get a case manager?

We will allocate you a dedicated case manager who will discuss your requirements. You are welcome to have family members involved.

Who can get a case manager?

Case Management is available to veterans who have served in a recognised war or emergency. Partners, ex partners, and children of Vietnam and Operation Grapple veterans who need counselling are welcome to access this service. Children with spina bifida and, or cleft lip/palate, who have a parent who served in Vietnam or Operation Grapple can access additional assistance.

Do I need to be getting a War Disablement Pension to get a case manager?

No, you do not need to be in receipt of a War Disablement Pension to access this service.

Where is my case manager?

Case managers are based in our Wellington and Hamilton offices.

How do I contact my case manager?

You can contact your case manager by: free phone in New Zealand 0800 483 8372 or 64 7 859 7696 if you live overseas. Fax 64 4 495 2080, e-mail veterans@xtra.co.nz. Write to Veterans’ Affairs, PO Box 5146, Wellington, 6145.

Will the help I get come from Wellington or Hamilton?

Although your case manager will be based in Wellington/Hamilton, they will arrange for your care to be provided by people in your community.

How much will it cost to be case managed?

Case management is free.

Does having a case manager affect the grant of a War Disablement Pension?

No, while your case manager manages claims through the War Disablement Pension process, they are separate from the decision making process of a War Disablement Pension.

I’m already getting a War Disablement Pension and help from my GP; do I need a case manager?

If you’re satisfied with the support already in place, you may not need a case manager. If you’re unsure what services are available and are having difficulty maintaining your independence and well being, a case manager could help you to identify and access further care and support.
