Hon Judith Collins, Minister of Veterans’ Affairs. 20110411_WN_S1015650_0017.A Message from the Minister

Hon Judith Collins, Minister of Veterans’ Affairs

One of the highlights for me as Minister was attending the recent 70th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Crete here at Parliament.

Sixteen veterans, along with family members and helpers, travelled from around the country for a day of catching up with old friends, sharing memories and remembering those who fought and are no longer with us.

It was a real honour to meet these brave servicemen. Seven decades after the battle it still stands as one of the most significant engagements in our military history.

The large number of senior officials and politicians from all parties who turned out to meet these veterans speaks so highly of the respect in which they are held.

The Battle of Crete was one of the first of several major 70th anniversary commemorations that will take place in New Zealand and overseas between now and 2015.

For the servicemen and women themselves, the commemorations will be deeply personal. Our homage to them will be helping ensure they can attend and enjoy these commemorations.

I am leading work on a Cabinet paper detailing how the Government marks these anniversaries, and what we can do to help veterans attend 70th commemorations, both here in New Zealand or overseas. Given that many WWII veterans are now in their 90s, it is vital that these events are well planned, well managed and there is plenty of support available. This is not a task one agency can or should do alone. I will be consulting with the Ministers of Defence, Culture and Heritage, and Foreign Affairs in the preparation of the paper.

My first step will be to hear from veterans about what commemorations they would like to attend, and what assistance they would like the Government’s help with.

I invite all veterans, or groups representing veterans, who are looking to attend 70th anniversary commemorations to contact me:

Alternatively, veterans can contact Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand.
Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you.
Hon Judith Collins
