The Panel:

  • provides advice, comments, and guidelines to the Minister for Veterans on matters relating to veterans' health and the making of regulations, including recommending whether Statement of Principles, which are a decision-making tool developed in Australia, should be adopted in New Zealand
  • decides how the income of the Veterans' Medical Research Trust Fund is to be applied to research grants and awards.

Recent activity

In 2023, the Panel reported to the Minister on the health impacts of exposure to nuclear radiation and provided the Minister with advice on whether any changes should be made to the approach New Zealand currently takes to its nuclear veterans.

As a result of this report, the Government has extended entitlements that are already available to the children of Operation Grapple veterans to the children of Mururoa and Jayforce veterans.

You can read the Panel's advice in their report.
