AISA Department of Corrections
Veterans’ Affairs Operating Procedures, effective 1 July 2026
Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand and the Department of Corrections have implemented Operating Procedures under an Approved Information Sharing Agreement (AISA), effective 1 July 2026, to support veterans who enter, are in, or are leaving custody.
Click here for information about the Veterans’ Affairs AISA and refer here for how this AISA respects your privacy.
The AISA enables Veterans’ Affairs and Corrections to work together while ensuring personal information is managed in line with privacy and legal requirements. The Operating Procedures sets out what information can be shared and that it can only be shared with a veteran’s consent. If a veteran does not consent, they still have the option of contacting Veterans’ Affairs on 0800 483 8372 to discuss their entitlements and available support.
The purpose of this AISA and its Operating Procedures is to ensure veterans and other Veterans’ Affairs clients are identified while in custody. Early identification of a veteran will helps minimise the risk of unintended debt by ceasing entitlements which are not paid during custody. These Operating Procedures also enable Veterans’ Affairs to confirm and, where appropriate, provide support services. This may include support during custody, when the veteran is approaching parole, and when they preparing to return to the community.
These Operational Procedures (related to this AISA) are designed to support timely, coordinated assistance for veterans, improving access to services, supporting positive outcomes during and after custody, all while maintaining their privacy.
