Refurbished Hokianga Arch of Remembrance

Refurbished Hokianga Arch of Remembrance

Veterans’ Affairs has recently supported the refurbishment of the Hokianga Arch of Remembrance through its Commemorative project fund.

The Hokianga Arch of Remembrance is in Kohukohu, a town in the Far North District. Originally dedicated in January 1927, it stands in a seaside reserve near the Kohukohu wharf, honouring local men who gave their lives in international conflicts.

The memorial features tablets commemorating 90 men from the First World War, 80 from the Second World War, as well as one each from the Vietnam and Afghanistan conflicts.

The Arch has been moved twice but is currently located near its original location.

Due to wear and tear the Hokianga RSA made an application for funding to Veterans’ Affairs to get it fixed which was approved and the work has been completed.

The Arch of Remembrance is a spectacular structure to remember and honour those who have served. The RSA Hokianga will hold its regular Armistice Day service at the arch on 11 November 2026 and in January 2027 it will be 100 years since the first dedication of the arch.

The Commemorative Project Contributions support New Zealand based projects that recognise veterans' sacrifice, including reunions and public memorials. You can apply for funding here(external link)
