Statements of Principles

The Statements of Principles (SOPs) are a tool to determine if an injury, illness or death is service-related.

On 11 May 2023, 22 replacement Statements of Principles and 4 new Statements of Principles came into force in New Zealand.

The Statements of Principles are for the following conditions:

Replacement SOPs

  • acute stress disorder
  • allergic rhinitis
  • atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter
  • epicondylitis
  • leptospirosis
  • malignant neoplasm of the prostate
  • malignant neoplasm of unknown primary site
  • pleural plaque
  • posttraumatic stress disorder
  • restless legs syndrome
  • rotator cuff syndrome

New SOPs

  • diaphragmatic hernia
  • portal vein thrombosis
