Change to the list of Statements of Principles and accepted late-onset conditions, October 2021

On 14 October 2021 changes were made to:

  • the list of Australian Statements of Principles that apply in New Zealand
  • the list of accepted late-onset conditions.

Statements of Principles

The Statements of Principles are a tool to determine if an injury, illness or death is service-related.

The Veterans’ Support Amendment Regulations (No 5) 2021 brought into force 4 new and 18 replacement Statements of Principles.

These Statements of Principles cover:

  • inguinal hernia
  • open-angle glaucoma
  • endometriosis
  • asbestosis
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
  • IgA nephropathy
  • malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx
  • pes planus
  • porphyria cutanea tarda
  • transverse myelitis (NEW)
  • hypogonadism (NEW).

Minor amendments to the Statements of Principles for ischaemic heart disease were accepted for use in New Zealand as published by Gazette Notice number 2021-gs4329.

Accepted late-onset conditions

The name of one condition on the list of accepted late-onset conditions at Schedule 2A of the Veterans’ Support Regulations has been updated, to align with the current name of Statements of Principles from which they were derived.

Accepted late-onset conditions are conditions that could be accepted as being linked to specific exposure or events occurring during qualifying operational service. They are applied to Scheme Two veterans only. Their purpose is to ensure that families of veterans whose death was the result of a late-onset malignancy or other physical or mental disorder receive entitlements under the Veterans’ Support Act 2014.
