Veterans’ Affairs supports mosaic on women in wartime
Veterans’ Affairs has supported a student-led art piece at Tauranga Girls’ College representing the role of women in wartime. The project received $3,500 funding through its Commemorative Project Contribution fund.
The 2m-by-2m artwork, Weaving Women’s Stories in Tile, honours women who served overseas, women who supported communities at home, and women who continue to serve today.

The artwork has four distinct sections, each reflecting different layers of women’s service and sacrifice. One panel recognises women who supported the home front during times of war. Another tile highlights the New Zealand Women’s Land Army. A kiwi symbol acknowledges those currently serving in the New Zealand Defence Force. Finally, a dove represents peace and the hope for a more peaceful future.
The mosaic was blessed by local iwi during the unveiling ceremony in May, attended by students, teachers, former prefects and community members who assisted with the project. The Last Post was played in remembrance of the women who contributed to wartime efforts.
The school has described the piece as more than just a tribute to the past; it represents an ever-strong and constant hope for future peace.
The school is appreciative of the efforts of the wider Tauranga community, students, and the 2025 and 2026 Community Prefects who helped bring this vision to life through many hours of hard work.
