Ensuring veterans are receiving the Veteran’s Pension

If you know veterans who are turning 65 soon, make sure they check out if they are eligible for the
Veteran’s Pension.

The Veteran's Pension is a fortnightly payment for people aged 65 or older who served in the NZ
Armed Forces on qualifying operational service.

There are a few extra benefits of the Veteran's Pension, when compared to the NZ Superannuation.

  • Veterans automatically get a Community Services Card — this will be combined with the Veteran SuperGold Card.
  • A veteran’s pension isn't reduced if they need long-term hospital care.
  • After a veteran’s death, their partner or children may be able to get a lump sum payment.
  • A veteran may be able to get lump sum payment on the death of their partner.

Veterans can apply for a Veteran's Pension from Work and Income eight weeks before they turn 65.
If veterans apply after they turn 65, the payments may only start from the date they apply.

For more information call the Veteran’s Pension Centre (Work and Income) on 0800 650 656 or read
