Veterans’ transport reimbursement rate increase

Fuel cost relief for veterans’ medical travel(external link)

On 1 April 2026 Veterans’ Affairs has increased the private vehicle mileage reimbursement rates for eligible treatment-related travel by 50 percent.

It is a temporary increase to ensure that veterans who receive support from Veterans’ Affairs continue to attend treatment, rehabilitation, or medical assessments for their accepted conditions during a period of high fuel charges. The increase rates will be from 1 April until 15 May 2026.

From 1 April 2026 the new rates will be:

  • For veterans travelling under 200kms (for a round trip) in a private vehicle the reimbursement rate will increase from 62 cents per kilometre to 91 cents per kilometre.
  • If veterans are travelling more than 200kms in a private vehicle the reimbursement rate will increase from 27 cents per kilometre to 41 cents per kilometre.

These rates will only apply to veterans’ travel for treatment after 31 March. All other eligibility criteria under the current policy remains unchanged and where travel occurs for treatment purposes other than by personal vehicle, full reimbursement will continue to be offered.

These rates do not apply to the travel concession under the Veterans’ Independence Programme, which is for recreational purposes.
