Entitlements, services, and support for families and whānau of veterans

Entitlements that may be available to family and whānau of veterans with Qualifying Service.

Eligibility for these entitlements, services, and support will depend on your own circumstances, including:

  • when the veteran first joined
  • where the veteran served.

Health Support Services

Counselling for Family Members or Support People

Funding for counselling for people who provide non-professional support to a veteran with a service-related injury or illness.

Child Care Payments

We may be able to make Child Care payments if a child's caregiver or parent dies because of Qualifying Service.

Burial in a Services Cemetery

To be buried in a Services Cemetery you must have served as a member of His Majesty's Forces on certain deployments, or be the spouse or partner of someone who has.

 

Children's Bursary

Children's Bursary may be able to support you while you study.

Plaque and Headstone Funding

We may be able to fund a plaque or headstone for people — and their spouse or partner — with Qualifying Service.

 

Children's Pension

A Children's Pension may be able to support you financially if your parent was severely impaired or died because of Qualifying Service.

Medals

Medals are issued and administered by the New Zealand Defence Force's Personnel Archives and Medals.

 

Weekly Compensation for Families

Weekly Compensation For Families may be able to support you with financial compensation after a veteran family member has passed away.

Service records

Most New Zealand military service records are held by New Zealand Defence Force's Personnel Archives and Medals. 

 

Dependant's Pension

A Dependant's Pension may be able to support you financially if you're dependent on someone that is severely impaired or died due to service.

Funeral Expenses

Funeral Expenses is a one-off financial contribution.

 

Financial Advice

You may be able to get financial advice funded by us if you received a lump sum payment greater than NZD$15,000 from certain entitlements.

 

 

Support for families of Jayforce, Grapple, and Mururoa Veterans

We may be able to provide counselling if you're the family of a Jayforce, Grapple, or Mururoa veteran.

 

 

Support for families of those with service in Viet Nam

There may be a number of support options available to you if you're the family of someone who served in Viet Nam.

 

 

Surviving Spouse or Partner Pension

Surviving Spouse or Partner Pension is a regular payment that recognises your loss of someone that had Qualifying Service.

 

 

Survivor's grant

This is a one-off payment that recognises your loss of someone that died because of Qualifying Operational Service.

 

 

Travel for Visitors of Veterans in Long-Term Hospital Care

We may be able to fund travel for you to visit someone in long-term hospital care.

 

 

Viet Nam registration

Family members of Viet Nam veterans should also register.

 

 

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation supports you with your work-related needs. This can be in many ways including retraining and education.
