Entitlements, services, and support for veterans who served before 1 April 1974

Entitlements that may be available to veterans who have Qualifying Service before 1 April 1974 or in Viet Nam.

  • when you first joined
  • where you served.

Health Support Services

Treatment

We may be able to fund treatment of service-related conditions.

War Disablement Pension

The War Disablement Pension is a historic payment to compensate for a Qualifying Service related condition.

Veterans' Independence Programme

This is a non-urgent, needs-based programme for veterans with Qualifying Service who are having some difficulty managing in their own home.

Mental health treatment

We may be able to help if you're experiencing mental health concerns related to your Qualifying Service.

Disablement Pension

The Disablement Pension provides compensation for those with a service-related injury or illness that impairs them.

Viet Nam registration

If you're a Viet Nam veteran we recommend you register with us. Family members of Viet Nam veterans should also register.

Rongoā Māori (traditional Māori healing)

We fund rongoā Māori as part of treatment and rehabilitation.

Retirement Lump Sum

The Retirement Lump Sum recognizes the challenges of saving when on financial support for a long time.

Commemorative Project Contribution

Commemorative Project Contributions support NZ based projects that recognise veterans' sacrifice. This includes reunions and public memorials.

Annual Medical Assessment

If you served in Viet Nam you may be able to have a free medical assessment every year.

Weekly Income Compensation

You may be able to get this support if you have Qualifying Service and can't work full-time because of a condition.

Commemorative Travel Contribution

A Commemorative Travel Contribution can be used to fund travel to commemorate your Qualifying Operational Service. This could be either internationally or within New Zealand.

Hearing Aids and Appliances

We may fund hearing aids and other appliances if you need them.

Travel for Treatment and Rehabilitation

We may be able to support your travel costs for assessment, treatment or rehabilitation. We might also be able to cover travel costs of someone escorting you.

Medals

Medals are issued and administered by the New Zealand Defence Force's Personnel Archives and Medals.

Battery Allowance

Battery Allowance is a regular payment intended to help cover the cost of replacing batteries for non-rechargeable hearing aids.

Support if you served in Viet Nam

You may be able to get extra support on top of entitlements that are already offered for Qualifying Service if you served in Viet Nam.

Service records

Most New Zealand military service records are held by New Zealand Defence Force's Personnel Archives and Medals.

Social Rehabilitation

Social Rehabilitation is about enabling you to live your best life possible.

Travel Allowance

Travel Allowance supports those with Qualifying Service that have a severe impairment and need support staying independent.

Veteran's Pin and Certificate of Appreciation

The Veteran's Pin and Certificate of Appreciation recognise operational service.

 

Veteran SuperGold Card

A Veteran SuperGold Card will get you the same benefits as a normal SuperGold Card. It has a different design on the front to recognise your service to NZ.

Burial in a Services Cemetery

To be buried in a Services Cemetery you must have served as a member of His Majesty's Forces on certain deployments, or be the spouse or partner of someone who has.

 

Clothing Allowance

Clothing Allowance recognises the costs of altering and cleaning clothing because of a service-related condition.

Plaque and Headstone Funding

We may be able to fund a plaque or headstone for people — and their spouse or partner — with Qualifying Service.

 

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation supports you with your work-related needs. This can be in many ways including retraining and education.
